CHAMPAGNE PROJECT
This project is a result of people working hard to get a standard in place that will produce the Champagne Netherland Dwarf variety. A Certificate of Development (C.O.D.) is on file with ARBA and can be seen on the American Netherland Dwarf website www. ANDRC.com along with the proposed standard for this variety dwarf. Some of the people I am involved with in my endeavors are; Kim Campbell, Ed Dowzeck, and Joe Powers. Kim Campbell is the COD holder along with Mike Avesing and Joe Powers.
As with any project worth doing my decision to promote a new variety came with criticism among other things. However, I feel as a breeder if I am going to feed the animals in my barn it might as well be something I like. I have a relatively small barn with 56 holes. Half the barn are F-1's and Champagnes. The other half is my ongoing breeding of show dwarfs. I got started with two F-1's and two champagnes I bought from Ed Dowczek. Since then I received animals from Kim Campbell that really helped me start to get the type we are looking for as dwarf breeders.
I used one of my black does with a champagne, and I bred the F-1 doe. I got one baby to each doe, both bucks. The champagne doe below produced 4 babies and I am excited about the start I have. I think the type we are looking for is finally starting to come through. On 6/17/2012 the champagne doe below produced this litter. There are four in the nest all doing well. And now on 7/20/2012 you can see the progress of our project three generations in the making.

This baby was born 7/20/2012 . Notice the pink nose and mouth. This is one indicator it will be a champagne as I have been recording the babies that do not have this coloring turn out to be F-1's or F-2's. Another indicator is that at three days of age if the pink coloring still persists the baby will most definetly be a champagne. This baby is out of KAYMAR'S FREUD X AHLER
This is one of the new kids on the block. Photo taken 8/16/2013. This baby will be champagne in color. The hairs around the nose and eyes are silvering and this is a good indication of proper color. Their father is a true champagne and their mother is a true champagne. Ears a bit large at this stage of life, but really thick.
